To Fall in Order to Rise
My name is Adriana but my friends call me Aid. I am fourteen years old, I love gymnastics! I started training when I was 6 years old.I train five times a week. Over the years I improved my skills so much that I got at least two or three medal at each meet.
The day it all changed...
I went to practice as usual, I was super excited; we were going to learn a new routine on the beam.
The routine was at a really high level, we had to do a cartwheel and two back flips. I waited patiently until it was my turn. I jumped onto the beam, I did a perfect cartwheel, the first back flip went okay... but during the second one I fell off the beam. At first I felt a lot of pain but I didn’t think it was anything serious, but when I looked at my elbow, it looked like it came out of place. The coach called my parents and they took me to the hospital.
At the hospital the doctors told us that I had dislocated my elbow, they gave me a lot of morphine and pushed my elbow back in place. To make sure it will stay in place they wrapped my arm with cast.
I went home, very sad and disappointed, the doctors said I have to be a month with the cast, and after that I have to go every day to physiotherapy to get my hand back to full function. In a month there is a big and important competition, it could have changed my life! Scouts are coming to see all the girls at the competition and at the end they are going to choose the the most talented girls and give them a full scholarship to the best gymnastics school in the USA.
Two months later...
They took off my cast and after very hard and painful work my hand is back to full function.I have decided to quit gymnastics for a couple of reasons:
First of all I missed my chance to compete at the important competition, another reason is I’m a bit afraid of getting back on the beam and falling again. Now all I had to is choose a different sport.
After thinking a lot... I decided to start playing soccer. I chose it mainly because it is something I always wanted to do and also because it will improve my running skills and will keep me in shape.
Soccer is a pretty popular sport for girls in the USA, but unfortunately for my age group there was only a team for boys. So I decided to join their team;there is a chance that they will give me a hard time and I won’t blend in but it will also give me a chance to get to know boys in their natural habitat.
